 Kochi University established Kochi University Office and Joint Laboratory in the Philippines' Regional Office No.2, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Department of Agriculture, which has concluded an agreement on a partner bureau institution with the Graduate School of Kuroshio Science. On Tuesday, February 16, 2010, Vice President Endo and Professor Morooka of the Graduate School of Kuroshio Science visited BFAR and attended the opening ceremony with Regional Director Ayson.

 

 Situated in Tuguegarao City in the province of Cagayan in the Northern part of Luzon Island, the BFAR is a governmental research institution that controls marine resources sustainable development, management, conservation, etc. In particular, the, BFAR Regional Office No.2, which exercises jurisdiction over five Northern provinces, is under strong influence of the Kuroshio Current flowing toward the north in the Pacific Ocean. Therefore, it has conducted joint research with Kochi University regarding the ecology of Philippines’ coastal zones. Through studies and research regarding the Kuroshio Current, both institutions provide and share accumulated research outcomes with each other and deepen comparative considerations on coastal zone ecological systems.

 In addition to the established office, a research laboratory, lodging rooms, etc. are prepared, which allows researchers from Kochi University to stay on a long-term basis. Further enhancement of Kuroshio Science is expected.
