The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan hosted a send-off party on March 5 for the 437 people selected from among 1,415 applicants from across Japan as members of the fourth group of students going to study abroad under the TOBITATE! NEXT JAPAN program, in which Honami Kubo, one of the chosen students, and her supervisor participated from our university. Two former members, one from the first group who studied in Paris and the other from the third group who studied in the United States, were the MCs of the party. It opened with an address by MEXT Minister Hiroshi Hase, who said, “I hope that you will make good friends during your studies abroad, and will return the favor to other people in the future in one way or another, 30 years or 40 years from now when you are working at a company, or perhaps the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, or starting your own venture businesses.”
This was followed by a message of encouragement from the President of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, one of the sponsors of the program, who said, “I would advise that you see as many things as you can, and talk with as many people as you can, during your studies abroad.”
After that, former members of the first group some of whom had studied in the Philippines and others in India, and another former member from the third group, who had studied in Malaysia, also delivered messages, and five students representing each course declared their resolutions as members of the fourth group.
